Read a chart in two minutes

Not a course and not a lecture. Seven steps, one diagram and one sentence each. By the end you will understand what the numbers in any natal chart mean — and why they are computed rather than invented.

You do not have to believe in astrology. But the mechanics are worth understanding — if only to know what the thing you disbelieve is actually made of.

step 1 / 7

The sky is a circle

A full turn is 360 degrees. It is divided into twelve equal parts of thirty. That is all the zodiac signs are: not personalities — sectors.

12 × 30° = 360°

step 2 / 7

A planet lands in a sector

We compute where the Sun stood at the moment you were born. It falls into one of the twelve sectors — and that sector is what people call your sign.

Sun · sector 10

step 3 / 7

The degree is what matters

"Sun in Capricorn" is like saying "somewhere in this city". 25°19′ is an address. The difference between the 2nd degree and the 29th is bigger than between two neighbouring signs.

precise to the arc-minute

step 4 / 7

The ascendant is your minute

This is the degree that was genuinely rising over the horizon when you were born. It shifts one degree every four minutes — so without a birth time it does not exist, and that is why it is yours alone.

1° = 4 minutes

step 5 / 7

Twelve houses

The first house starts at the ascendant, then round the circle. The sign says HOW something works. The house says WHERE it shows: the first is you, the seventh is close relationships, the tenth is work.

ascendant → house 1

step 6 / 7

The angle between two

Draw lines to two planets and there is an angle between them. 120° means these two parts of you work together easily. 90° means they pull against each other. That is an aspect.

orb ±7° — the tolerance

step 7 / 7

Retrograde is an overtake

Planets do not reverse. Earth simply moves faster and overtakes them — the way one car passes another. From our side the overtaken planet looks, for a few weeks, like it is going backwards.

Three lines from someone else’s chart

None of these were in the lesson. You can already read them — everything you need, you have just seen.

  1. A chart says: Venus 29° Taurus. What does that mean?

Every sector is thirty degrees, numbered 0 to 29. The twenty-ninth is the last one: less than a degree remains before the next sign.

  2. The Sun and Saturn are three degrees apart. That is…

An aspect is the angle between two bodies, and it is not counted exactly but with a tolerance. Three degrees is well inside it, so the link holds. The closer they are, the stronger it is.

  3. Mercury is retrograde. What is actually happening in the sky?

Earth overtakes Mercury, and against the stars it briefly appears to fall back — exactly like a car you are passing seems to slide backwards. Nothing turns around.

That is it — you read a chart

You just worked out three lines nobody explained to you. It only gets more interesting on your own chart: same numbers, but about you.

You just read a chart

Sector, degree, ascendant, house, angle, loop. That is the entire vocabulary you need to look at a natal chart and understand what it says. Next one is yours.
