Houses: twelve areas of life

If a sign says in what manner something works, a house says in which part of life it is visible. Either one alone reads at half strength.

Where they come from

Houses are not regions of the sky but regions of the daily rotation. The zodiac is fixed against the stars; the Earth turns underneath it, and in a day every point of the zodiac spends time both above and below the horizon. Houses divide that circle into twelve and tie it to a specific place on Earth.

So a date is not enough for houses — the time and the city are needed. Without them a house cannot be computed, and we leave the column empty.

The twelve houses of the example

Whole-sign houses: the ascendant’s sign becomes the entire first house, the next sign the second. That is the system this site computes.

What each one means

These are traditional correspondences. They are not demonstrated; they are the language the tradition uses to describe areas of life.

• 1 — you: how you start, how you read at first sight.
• 2 — your own: money, possessions, what you treat as worth something.
• 3 — the nearest circle: conversations, siblings, the trip to work.
• 4 — home and family line: where you are from, and what you return to.
• 5 — your own, outward: making things, children, play, risk for pleasure.
• 6 — the daily: work as routine, the body, the shape of the day.
• 7 — the other: partnership, marriage — and open opponents too.
• 8 — shared and deep: other people’s resources, debts, crises, change.
• 9 — the far: study, other countries, convictions.
• 10 — the visible: profession, reputation, what people call you.
• 11 — the group: friends, circles, shared aims.
• 12 — the unseen: solitude, what stays off the record.

Why whole-sign houses

Several house systems exist and they give different boundaries. This site computes whole sign: the ascendant’s sign becomes the entire first house, the next sign the second. It is the oldest and simplest system, and it has one advantage worth naming plainly: its boundaries do not jump with the birth minute, so there is nowhere to hide an error.

In systems like Placidus a house can stretch across two signs, and the same planet lands in the sixth or the seventh depending on which system was chosen. We picked one and say which, instead of staying quiet about the choice.

Three groups of houses

The twelve houses fall into three sets of four, and the split explains more than a list of meanings does:

• Angular (1, 4, 7, 10) — where something begins. These are the four points of the daily circle: rising, bottom, setting, top. Bodies there are traditionally read as the most prominent.
• Succedent (2, 5, 8, 11) — where what began is held: money, making things, shared resources, your circle of people.
• Cadent (3, 6, 9, 12) — where it is rethought and passed on: talking, routine, study, solitude.

The same rhythm as the modes of the signs: cardinal, fixed, mutable. Not a coincidence — the same idea applied to a different circle.

And if a house is empty

The commonest beginner’s question, and the commonest misplaced worry. Ten bodies, twelve houses: at least two houses are always empty, for every person without exception. In the example above there are more than two.

An empty house does not mean the area of life is missing. It means there is no separate engine in it, and you then read it by the sign on the house and by where that sign’s ruler stands. An empty seventh house is not “no relationships”; it is “go look at Venus”.

The ruler of a house

Every house has a sign on it, and every sign has a ruling planet. That planet is called the ruler of the house, and it reads as “where this area is actually decided”. The technique is simple and it is exactly what rescues an empty house.

An example: if Libra sits on the seventh house, the ruler is Venus. You look at which sign and house Venus itself occupies — and that, by tradition, is where the answer about partnership lies. Not in the empty seventh house, but wherever its ruler leads.

That is exactly how the relationships reading is built: it looks at the seventh house, its ruler, Venus and Mars — and the angles to them.

How to read it together

Three things to fold into one sentence: the body (what), the sign (how) and the house (where). In the example above Jupiter in Cancer in the tenth house reads as “expansion, domestically, in the visible”. That is not a prophecy about a career: it is a description you can hold your own life against and see whether it fits.
