The Moon through the signs: why no two days are alike

Of the ten bodies in a chart, only one moves appreciably in a day. So a daily forecast is first of all a forecast about the Moon, and everything else in it is background.

Why it is the Moon

The Moon crosses the whole zodiac in twenty-seven and a half days — about thirteen times faster than anything else. The Sun shifts one degree in a day, the Moon thirteen. That is why “today” differs from “yesterday” at all: nothing else in the sky changed much overnight.

This is arithmetic, not interpretation: if a forecast says different things today and yesterday, the Moon almost certainly supplied the difference.

And it travels unevenly

Here the familiar “two and a half days per sign” turns out to be an average rather than a schedule:

• 15.4°/dayfastest — a sign in 47 hours
• 11.8°/dayslowest — a sign in 61 hours

Measured over eight years. The Moon’s orbit is elongated, so “two and a half days per sign” is an average, not a schedule: the spread between the fastest and the slowest sign is nearly a third.

The cause is the shape of the orbit. It is an ellipse, not a circle: closer to Earth the Moon moves faster, further away slower. The spread between the fastest and the slowest crossing of a sign is nearly a third — up to fourteen hours. So the site never writes “the Moon changes sign in two days”: it computes the moment rather than adding an average.

What the tradition reads in the Moon’s sign

Two different things, easily confused.

• The Moon in a birth chart — the sign it stood in at your minute. Read as how you react: not what you think, but what you do first when there is no time to think.
• The Moon today — the same body, but about the day rather than about you. The same for everyone on the planet.

Void of course

One term worth knowing, because you will certainly run into it: the Moon void of course. That is the stretch during which the Moon will form no further aspect before leaving its sign — every angle it was going to make in that sign is already behind it.

Computing it involves no mystery: take the Moon’s position, look at which aspects lie ahead of it before the sign boundary, and if there are none, the period has begun. It lasts from a few minutes to nearly a day.

The tradition reads such a stretch as a time when what is started does not take, and advises against beginning anything new in it. Treat that as a description of tone rather than a prohibition: there is no evidence that things actually fall through more often in those hours.

Phase and sign are different things

The commonest confusion. The Moon’s sign is where it is in the zodiac. Its phase is how lit it is — the angle between it and the Sun. A full moon happens in any sign, and so does a new one.

There is a link, but an indirect one: a full moon is the Moon opposite the Sun, so in the opposite sign. If the Sun is in Virgo, the full moon will be in Pisces. You can work that out yourself without any calendar.

The twelve Moon signs, briefly

Not a description of you but the tone of the day — what the tradition reads while the Moon crosses that sign. The element decides more here than the sign itself:

• Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) — days when starting comes easier than finishing. More energy for the beginning than patience for the middle.
• Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) — days for what is meant to last: routine, order, work with the hands. Poor for improvising.
• Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) — days of talking and agreeing. Easy to explain things, harder to concentrate.
• Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) — days when mood is more noticeable than circumstances. Good for what gets done alone.

Read it as a weather forecast rather than a schedule: the tone of a day obliges you to nothing, it only says what is cheaper today and what costs more.

What is not here

There are no “unlucky days”. The Moon in a given sign does not make a day good or bad — the tradition describes a tone with it, not an outcome. Any calendar advising you not to cut your hair on a particular day promises something the system does not contain.

You can compute your natal Moon in the reading — it does not depend on the birth time, with one exception: if you were born on a day it changed sign.
