Beginners are usually handed a list of seventy-eight meanings and told to memorise it. Nobody does, and those who do end up reciting a dictionary. The deck is built differently, and it takes seven steps to see how.
The important part happens at step four: you will read a card you have never seen and never studied. Not a trick — just how the deck is put together.

The deck has two floors
Twenty-two majors speak about what changes a life. Fifty-six minors are about this week: money, conversations, work, feelings. If a spread is full of majors, the question is bigger than the person asking thought.

Four suits — four materials
Wands are action and will. Cups are feeling and connection. Swords are thought, words, truth. Pentacles are money, body, work. Not four topics — four substances a situation is made of.

The numbers are one story
From ace to ten the same arc runs through every suit. One: something begins. Five: something breaks. Eight: the work is skilled but not finished. Ten: the end, complete or overflowing.

You just learned to read 56 cards
Put the two axes together and the meaning falls out. Five of Cups: five is a break, cups are feeling — so loss. Eight of Pentacles: eight is skilled work, pentacles are labour and body — so daily practice. Nothing to memorise.

Look at the picture, not at your memory
The 1909 deck was drawn so that the picture itself reads. Who is in it? What are they holding? Standing or walking? Day or night? Is the ground solid? A beginner describing what they see out loud is already reading — and reading better than someone reciting a memorised line.

Reversed is not the opposite
It is the same force, turned inward or slowed. Not "the opposite" and certainly not "bad news". A force held in, a process braking, a quality turned back on itself. Sometimes it just means "not yet".

Three cards make a sentence
The real skill is not knowing three cards but seeing the line between them: what brought this, where it stands, where it leans. Three separate meanings side by side is not a reading — it is three dictionary entries.

You have studied none of them. But you can see the suit and the number — and nothing else is needed.
Ace of Swords. What does it mean?
One — something begins. Swords — thought, words, truth. So: the beginning of clarity, the thing you have just understood.
Five of Pentacles. What does it mean?
Five — something breaks. Pentacles — money, body, work. So: the crack is exactly where a person stands.
Ten of Wands. What does it mean?
Ten — the end, complete or overflowing. Wands — action and will. So: action carried to its limit — you are hauling it all, and it is now too much.
