Almost nobody in America stole anything that night

The studio had 728 seats. About fifty thousand requests came in. And while the show was on air, crime in the country dropped — a detail retold for years, with an entirely prosaic explanation.

Sullivan came across the Beatles by accident — in October 1963 his flight was delayed at a London airport and he walked into a crowd of teenagers meeting some band from Sweden. He asked who they were. Weeks later he was signing a contract.

Before the broadcast CBS received about fifty thousand ticket requests. There were 728 seats. Sullivan went on air the week before to ask viewers to stop asking.

What was measured then was households, not people: 23.24 million. The famous “73 million” is an extrapolation from an assumption about how many people sat in front of one set. Nobody counted heads.

And the same goes for the crime story: for those sixty minutes almost the whole country sat in front of a screen — including the teenagers who account for a noticeable share of petty offences. Not a miracle, just the arithmetic of attention.

The chart of that minute

The broadcast started at eight in the evening in New York — which by Greenwich is already one in the morning of the next day. This is where half of all event charts break: a chart is built on universal time, not local.

The Sun is in the fifth house. In any textbook the fifth is the stage, the play, the public performance. Beside it in Aquarius stand Mars and Saturn: three bodies in one sign within five degrees.

How this reads

The Six of Swords upright is a crossing, a departure, a leaving behind. Reversed it says the crossing is slowed by what is unfinished. For four musicians facing an American audience for the first time this was exactly a crossing — and leaving Liverpool behind did not yet mean Liverpool had left them.

The numbers check against any ephemeris; the card came from an algorithm. A reading is a reading.
